Located in the southernmost region of Portugal, the Algarve is the most important tourist region of Portugal. Also one of the most significant vacations spots in Europe, it is known for fishing, golf resorts, beaches, and spectacular coastlines and islands. The sunny shores in the region provide a memorial experience with nature even as historical sites, such as the former Moorish Capital Silves, glare from a near distance. The emerald blue-green waters, wide beaches that stretch as far as the eyes can see, and the magnificently beautiful deserted islands create one of Europe’s most beautiful and sought-after retirement and vacation spots.
The Serra de Monchique mountains in the western part of the Algarve have historically provided a great environment for people of all cultures. Cities in this region, like Silves, serve as historical sites because of the wonderful traces of Arabic past preserved in them. Seaside towns such as Lagos, Portimao and Albufeira are cosmopolitan while providing memorable views of the Atlantic Ocean as it begins to fuse with the Mediterranean Sea. Another coastal town, Tavira, provides the traditional architecture whereas the town of Faro is the entrance to the Algarve region.
