Avon was a county in the South West of England, which was close to both Wales and the Midlands. Parts of Avon were noted for scenic countryside especially by the river banks. The largest city in the county was Bristol, which has a port, three train stations, and a university. After Bristol was the largest city in the county. The eastern side of the Severn Bridge is in Bristol and Wales is on the other side. It was only a short-lived county in its own right set up as part of the Local Government Act of 1972, coming into being in 1974. The county of Avon was named after the Avon river that runs through the area; the Severn is the other main river that is in the borders of the county that was abolished in 1996. Bristol resorted to being a county by itself, while the remaining areas of the county went back to being parts of Gloucestershire and Somerset.
