Water plants floating on the lake surface. The stalks exposed to sunlight will turn red, those remaining in the shadow will stay green.
  • Country: Macedonia
Submerged reed leaves covered in tiny gas bubbles can shine like this under certain angles relative to the Sun.

An underwater view of sunshine - and the lack of it.

Several years ago I found this sunken tree, and nowadays it is already a home for numerous shells. Life goes on.
  • Country: Macedonia
A large underwater rock populated by numerous shells, and from above it looks quite like a settlement. Probably because in a way, it actually is...
  • Country: Macedonia
The water plants develop roots already while floating, so as to be ready when the currents and winds bring them to their final location...
  • Country: Macedonia
Typical view of the Lake Ohrid bottom, looking upwards. In many aspects it is like a sea - only, you dont have to wash your diving gear afterwards!
  • Country: Macedonia
Freshly metamorphed dragonflies, just out of their underwater "suits where theyve spent maybe four years. Now theyre drying in the sunlight, preparing for the second, short part of their life, which is extremely different from what they did underwater.

... for the refreshing feeling you gave me, ... for the attractively designed container, ... for the joy of low priced, sweet taste, and for the chance to show what Ecology, Save The Planet, and Recycle really means to the brainless majority when they think no-one is looking.
  • Country: Macedonia
The snake attaching itself to the reed, to rest for a while... By the way, this is my 2018th photo - taken in 2018, and posted in 2018, too!
  • Country: Macedonia
The fishview of life-giving Sun - or how we presume the underwater beings perceive it.
  • Country: Macedonia
A piece of torn fishermens net left in water, which continues to trap, snag, and kill fish and crustaceans. This one was properly taken out of water and disposed of. Please do the same (be careful!).
  • Country: Macedonia
... but only in comparison to the bottom-living shells! These fixed on the reedstalk may have a temporarily better view, but come winter, all the reed stumps will be broken off by deep-acting waves. So, everything is relative... same as in human society.
  • Country: Macedonia
Various homemade concrete blocks made as a bottom weights meant for attaching the boat mooring buoy to it during summer months.
  • Country: Macedonia
Decided on this one for my 2000th photo on CE. I hope you find it nice enough for the occasion!
  • Country: Macedonia
Everything in the Nature has a way to support each other.
  • Country: Macedonia
The wind makes the reed bend to the water and below, showing respect for uncontrollable force. Good thinking.
  • Country: Macedonia
I pulled this out of the lake bottom sand, and it looks like a number of things... Most of it all like the remnants of an old artillery casing, but cant be sure. It is too thoroughly rusted. Anyway, let it remain a mystery.

Leaves that fall in the Fall
  • Country: Macedonia
Autumn leaves the leaves that fall on the botom... :)))
  • Country: Macedonia
Someboody has walked along here, probably during the night... Still havent discovered who... :)
  • Country: Macedonia
The uniform reedstalk shapes disturbed by the snakes wavy form.
  • Country: Macedonia
Our Lisa often finds small beings in the grass or even underwater, and shell stand there for 20 minutes communicating in some way which were quite incapable of understanding.
  • Country: Macedonia
The shrimp is autochtonous to our lake, and is a welcome sign of clean waters, because any pollution is able to decimate the sort.
  • Country: Macedonia
Underwater view on Lake Ohrid botanics
  • Country: Macedonia
One of my friendly snakes rests between two hunting dives. Wound firmly around the reedstalk, it can even sleep for a while. Or thats how they appear sometimes...
  • Country: Macedonia
The feeling of falling sometimes comes with downward views in images (and life). Here, fortunately there is water to help negate the gravity. In the lake reed forest.

Another example of practical human thinking. Someone was swimming along and one goggle cup was filling with water, being sprung along the rim. Or maybe someone stepped on the goggles in the boat, cracked one lens and declared them unfit for use. So whats to do? The easiest way is to drop de dam thang in the water and forget it. Cheap enough to replace. And then someone snorkels along and the goggles finally get disposed of properly. Now... the things no-one ever finds, the depths no-one will ever visit, the garbage thats never recovered... Human nature versus natural Nature. How much can it stand? Ere long, well find out.

Big mushroom-shaped rock offers plenty of shade, protects from annoying waves, and grants more ways to escape from danger. It also saves one the effort of digging out sand from under the bottom stone. The shells growing all over the place ensure sufficient food. So, Hernando has found himself a nearly perfect hideaway. Feeling safe, he did not run from the approaching camera. Theres an old song titled "Hernandos Hideaway". Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC05YwDUmVg

In this phase the blooming algae develop many tiny gas bubbles and the clump rises to the surface. Wind, currents and waves will scatter it far and wide, and then it will sink and rot, giving chance to the seed to gain a hold. For some reason, when these green beings start to darken and sink, eels will often be found under the blackened layers. Nature is mysterious... but only to us humans!

Relatively new on the market, made by divers for divers! But this pretty little camera works just as well in many other circumstances. Find all about it here: https://pevly.com/paralenz-dive-camera-review/

Located in the Bay of Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is an archipelago consisting of about 600 islands out of which only around 36 islands are inhabited. The archipelago is divided into two groups of islands - the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands. Of these, only 9 islands in the Andaman Islands group are open for tourists. In earlier times, the islands were referred to as Kalapani for their notorious penal settlement. Pristine beaches, gorgeous corals, fascinating marine life, adventurous water sports and the remain of Stone Age culture draw multitudes of tourists to these islands every year. These islands are covered with lush forests and endless varieties of exotic flora and fauna.

Human-induced scourge plaguing all water bodies around the planet, this Nylon Beast will decompose for ages. Why are we so lame and unable to stop this behavior? It has to do with inner rage at inadequacies and dishonesty that seems to run within our so-called civilisation. But thats another, unending theme.
  • Country: Macedonia
Underwater grasses reach for the surface to get closer to the Sun... the shallow water will also help with seed spreading, by dint of waves which tear off the parts of the stalks. In the meantime, it just looks beautiful...
  • Country: Macedonia
When your sky is like a mirror, everything will be symmetrical... if the surface will allow.
  • Country: Macedonia
Bubbles of gas emanating from decaying organic matter stick to the reedstalks and leaves, moss, or lichen-covered rocks, creating sparkling surfaces for Sunlight to reflect off.

Aging and seasonal winds make the reedstalks bow and their leaves sink under the lake surface. Turn the photo around and a strange, alien forest appears.

I found this piece of crockery in the ever-shifting sands of the lake bottom. It appears to be some sort of jar cover, but it is hard to say how old,or what kind of vessel it was sealing. Until I discover more details, lets call it "baked clay smiley".

OK, it is automatically an ad when you see products consumed. It is something quite different when you see it consumed by a moron, someone who cant clearly understand the concept of clean water, recycling of materials, and has no urge to become better citizen and person. What riles me is that such beings also have the right to vote, let alone walk the streets like normal folks.
  • Country: Macedonia
Rare are the chances to see a cormorant underwater, that is, when you dive. Ive only seen it twice. But sometimes you can see him underwater if youre lucky, and he is diving nearby. Like here.

A joint endeavor of NASA, the European Space Agency, or ESA, and the Italian Space Agency, Cassini launched in 1997 along with ESAs Huygens probe. The spacecraft contributed to studies of Jupiter for six months in 2000 before reaching its destination, Saturn, in 2004 and starting a string of flybys of Saturns moons. That same year it released the Huygens probe on Saturns moon Titan to conduct a study of the moons atmosphere and surface composition. In its second extended mission, which went through 2017, Cassini made the first observations of a complete seasonal period for Saturn and its moons. ( https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/missions/cassini-huygens/ ) On September 15, 2017, Cassini was ordered to swerve from its orbit and burn up in Saturns atmosphere. But Id like to think that the Pefect Probe had managed to land safely, and in spite of all science, now lives well in its new World. It surely deserves it!
  • Country: Macedonia
Is that how waterlife sees the World on the other side of the surface? Unless we are living the life in water, well never know.
  • Country: Macedonia
A waterplant sheds such segments and lets them float to new destinations by wind and current, as its clever way of spreading.
  • Country: Macedonia
Well I was actually brazenly obvious... The next second the snake was gone, for when they move, they MOVE! :)
  • Country: Macedonia
The crab cleaning his den from sand and shingle. Then the next windy weather and resulting waves will push the bottom sediment back in, and hell have to do it all again. And so on... ob-la-di, ob-la-da... :)
  • Country: Macedonia
The sky we know changes a lot - but the sky that underwater life knows changes even more! And - it also reflects whats underneath, as opposed to our sky! Can it be that underwater world is even more beautiful than ours on dry land?
  • Country: Macedonia
Found this young freshwater shrimp zipping around me in the water, and have managed to halt it for a few seconds, so as to take this one photo.

We can all understand fishing; its one of the means of survival and should be regarded as a part of lifecycle both for fishes and humans. But when someone throws overboard or does not remove parts of damaged nets, it is an act of brainless cruelty. People forget or never think about the fact that jilted nets continue to entrap underwater life for as long as the existence of its last filament! Even sadder part of the story is that torturous death of any animal that gets caught is as slow as it is useless. So whats the saddest aspect? Maybe its the mental state of people which cause it. Please, always remove all nets and net parts from water, wherever you notice such things! Life will be grateful.

The third quarter of the year is already visible around, also underwater.

Distorted through the wavy surface, the portrait looks really special. We can only imagine how the fish see things above.

Up there, the weather is changing... and down here, it can be felt too.

This is how I have customized my underwater camera: 1 Lens Cap (on wet lens adapter) 2 Lens Cap safety line (detachable at fingerplate) 3 Fingerplate (above middle and fourth finger, secures camera grip) 4 Adjusts strap length (camera to fingerplate) between fingers 5 Adjusts wrist strap loop length 6 Wrist strap (with provided safety breaking point) 7 Spirit bubble level (glued to camera) All modifications were made to enable me the one-handed use of the camera, as the fingerplate lets me hold the camera securely even with open palm, until I spread the fingers; that releases the fingerplate. In the meantime I can operate all the camera commands using just the thumb of the camera-holding hand. The spirit bubble level is superglued within the concave line in the camera case, and it lets me quickly correct the camera horizontality from all positions, without checking the monitor. The wrist strap ends are connected above the wrist with small metal clip that will rip apart when certain force is applied, which helps one to free oneself if the camera gets entangled during free dive. Of course, everyone is free to copy any one or all solutions shown here!

I thought this butterfly was dead, and then I noticed it was moving. I tried to save him out of the water, just to realise it wanted to go right back. Actually, I was witnessing the laying of eggs on underwater plants, as this insect was creating a future generation. We live to learn...
  • Country: Macedonia
A butterfly laying eggs on an underwater reedstick. Very interesting to see such way of procreation!

One among the ways to gather candd underwater photos is to leave one camera in this fashion (set on Timelapse Photo mode), while snorkeling around with another. Expect various beings visiting the alien "plant" sticking from the lake bottom... while you hunt withanother camera in hand! Fun! Find out more here: https://pevly.com/sjcam-sj6-legend-air-review/

Before trustng the newly acquired camera, one should first test its resistence to water pressure, of course within the recommendations given by its manufacturer. So here is such a test for the new "USB casing" with touch-enabled hatch...

Having been surprised on the surface, the snake seeks the bottom cover by the most direct line, creating an interesting view.

... there was an Underwater Photography Contest that asked for "creative" photos. This chandelier was at hand and so it got the chance to dwell 20 meters under the sea - for a while!

Only an empty, fragile dry shell remained hooked to the concrete, while its former inhabitant broke out, exiting through the crack in the back. The fugitive is now a beautiful dragonfly, having changed its underwater world for the dry land. It will spend the rest of its life flying, eating, and reproducing under the Sunlight. A Sudden Bird, or finally Fall Will be the Force that ends it all...

Kids are merciless. Once the heel strap snaps they just let the fin sink, and since one is no good theyll jilt another one too. It cost them nothing, and the new pair will cost them the same: parents are like that. Instead of cutting out the new strap out of an old inner bike tube, theyll simply buy a new pair of fins for their spoiled brat. In a way, our children only reflect us and our throw-away-and-forget mindset. Makes me hesitate to forecast anything about future generations...
  • Country: Croatia
Diving is really an addictive fun, although preparations can largely exceed the time spent underwater. Among other things, one has to spend hours loading air into the tanks. The din created by the compressor is on the opposite side of the silent world.

Cousin to coral, this colonial animal thrives in depths where currents bring mcro-organisms to its myriads of polyps. Made with Nikonos III / 35m UW Nikkor /Sunpak Marine strobe and Fujichrome Sensia, deep in the Adriatic sea.
  • Country: Croatia
Electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) in the shade of Adriatic depths. The fish has just arrived and landed on a nearby outcrop, raising clouds of sediment. Took some frames with Nikonos III, carefully keeping my distance. The fish can discharge pretty powerful electric shocks, and deep down its the last thing youd wish to experience! Electric fishes use their high voltage charge to hunt by stunning their prey. While the science generally understands their electric battery / capacity mechanism, were still know nothing about "the switch" which enables them to discharge at will.
  • Country: Croatia
Common sole (Solea vulgaris) in the sandy shallows of the Adriatic, photographed by my diving buddy. in the cristal clear sea of Croatian Maritime Natl Park Kornati. The place cant really be described. It simply has to be experienced the way we did some 30 years ago.

Egg case (Chondrichthyes) of a catshark, fixed to a Red Finger Gorgonian (Diodogorgia nodulifera). Found decades ago deep under the Adriatic surface. Photographed with Nikonos III + 35mm UW Nikkor and Sunpak Marine strobe on Fujichrome Sensia.

I took this snake off the reedstalk for some quick portraits, then let it go. He wasnt alarmed in the slightest, and simply swam to another reed about one meter away. Nice models, my snakes!
