Calmly swimming in the lake shallows, the watersnake is always an interesting theme!
  • Country: Macedonia
The snake attaching itself to the reed, to rest for a while... By the way, this is my 2018th photo - taken in 2018, and posted in 2018, too!
  • Country: Macedonia
The uniform reedstalk shapes disturbed by the snakes wavy form.
  • Country: Macedonia
One of my friendly snakes rests between two hunting dives. Wound firmly around the reedstalk, it can even sleep for a while. Or thats how they appear sometimes...
  • Country: India
This was captured at Vandaloore Zoo.

When your sky is like a mirror, everything will be symmetrical... if the surface will allow.

A snake coming to the surface, for air - and some photos... :)
  • Country: Macedonia
Well I was actually brazenly obvious... The next second the snake was gone, for when they move, they MOVE! :)
  • Country: Macedonia
The snake saw me spying upon him and has decided to turn back. So... heads or tails? ;)
  • Country: Macedonia
Attracted to my bright red snorkel, the snakes will regularly approach to check it out. Fun!
  • Country: Macedonia
Having been surprised on the surface, the snake seeks the bottom cover by the most direct line, creating an interesting view.

I went for a snorkeling swim to test a camera (its what I do) and to visit my water friends, fishes and reptiles. So I met this young fellow which, like 99% of all watersnakes, shows neither fear nor agression. He remained on my palm watching me and the camera with curiosity until it became too warm for him and he slithered back into the water. Im certain well meet again, and many times! And when he grows big, hell probably behave just like here. They remember well!
  • Country: Macedonia
    Small snake I met underwater...
  • Country: Macedonia
Small snakes know no fear, until theyve met with their first enemy. Fortunately for them, it is never me! So they behave, showing only curiosity. Fun, my lake snakes are!
  • Country: Macedonia
Watersnake (Natrix tessellata) at periscope depth, studying the camera...
  • Country: Macedonia
I took this snake off the reedstalk for some quick portraits, then let it go. He wasnt alarmed in the slightest, and simply swam to another reed about one meter away. Nice models, my snakes!
  • Country: Macedonia
The cormorant is in a bit of a snag, trying to swallow the snake. Unlike spaghetti, snakes cant be wicked prior to swallowing, especially when one is out on the waters and utterly without a fork...
  • Country: Macedonia
One more photo of one of my underwater friends!
  • Country: Macedonia
Theyre all inquisitive and unagressive, but one in, say, hundred will be special - unafraid to the utmost, and curious you wouldnt believe.
  • Country: Macedonia
Snake changing course after seeing me. Maybe I pulled his tail last time we met... ;)
  • Country: Macedonia
Two watersnakes, distinctively different in coloration, but equally friendly and inquisitive.
  • Country: Macedonia
The watersnake has caught himself a fish, and is now swimming toward the shore where it will be easier to organize the way to swallow it head-first.
  • Country: Macedonia
Spying on a watersnake from below the surface. The sky and clouds create nice background.
  • Country: Macedonia
Curious and unafraid, the snake poses like a proper model. Beautiful eyes, too!
  • Country: Macedonia
My lake snakes know me well, and have not the slightest fright to approach and explore. This one I literally had to remove by hand! Im seriously thinking about some grid atop my snorkel, because some snakes might have funny ideas... :)
  • Country: Macedonia
This summer was characterized by significant raise in number of snakes I have met underwater. Heres one image with more than one.
  • Country: Macedonia
Natural abstraction. Of course. Who can create better art than Nature?
  • Country: Macedonia
Coiled from above, the snake uses the shadow of floating vegetation to snipe at the unsuspecting fish. Quite an interesting and ingenious way to hunt. Also very succesful.
  • Country: Macedonia
The snake suddenly saw me approaching and let out the air so as to be able to dive down quickly. Same trick the submarines do... :)
  • Country: Macedonia
The watersnake has caught a fish. Now hes going to swim to someplace dry to better manipulate it for swallowing it head-first. The way its grabbed now... problematic!
  • Country: Macedonia
The watersnake lining up a fish, for lunch purposes. Snakes are very efficient hunters.
  • Country: Macedonia
Fish-hunting snake is an interesting sight, and I often witness it during summer months. Hes swimming along with no sign of being alarmed at all.

    Snake in my backyard
  • Country: Macedonia
The watersnake resting, securely anchored to the reedstalks. Its reflection in the surface makes it look even more complicated... ;)
  • Country: Macedonia
My little trick to get the snake to look underwater, for a picture or two. Otherwise, hed still be up there, wondering at the snorkel... ;)
  • Country: Macedonia
Reflections are funny and fascinating things, arent they?
  • Country: Macedonia
The young snake fearlessly explores my hand, and then leisurely swims away. I treat such encounters as compliments, since I managed to appear friendly and present no danger. Thus, the inquisitive little souls come to me, and give me presents; like this picture.
  • Country: Macedonia
There are snakes of various sizes in my Lake. This curvaceous dame is about one meter long, so you can tell her "hip size". :)
  • Country: Macedonia
The snake was patient while I took it gently under the surface to make a photo. When I opened my hand, he swum away quite calmly. Then again, these snakes know me well, since I meet them during my everyday summer snorkelings...
  • Country: Macedonia
The unpredictable part of every water-related photo is the reflection, as it depends (among other things) upon the state of the surface. And underwater side of the surface makes it even more so.

I was taking pictures one day when I noticed the leaf moving that I was photographing. When I stepped away from the tree and looked into my camera to review, I realized the leaf was a snake.
  • Country: Macedonia
I made a pause in the swim, and an inquisitive snake came by to investigate.
  • Country: Singapore
    A snake eating a lizard
  • Country: Macedonia
... between two hunting forays, snakes will rest afloat, anchored to the reedstalk. Sometimes its possible to sneak up on them, and take a photo or two from short distance...
  • Country: Macedonia
Surprised whhile resting, this snake reacted quite typically; seeking to hide in the lake bottom growth! To reach the bottom, the snake will exhale all air, thus reducing positive buoyancy - pretty much like a submarine. :)
  • Country: Macedonia
I can keep the speed for some time, but if the snake really wants to flee, hell do it so fast that I can only wonder where hes gone. Thus, a maximum of one picture per chase is something Im quite proud of... :)
  • Country: Macedonia
The snake came leisurely over my left shoulder into my field of view, and proceeded to dive right in front of the camera. All I had to do was press the shutter release. Lucky me! :)
  • Country: Sri Lanka
    snake
  • Country: Macedonia
Surprising a snake in open water will urge him to dive and seek cover among bottom rock and vegetation. To get there quickly as possible, snake exhales to achieve negative buoyancy, and sink. Snakes can remain underwater for longer than ten minutes.
  • Country: India
I never cease to take a image of Rat Snake, the amazing length the snake always fascinated me.

  • Country: Macedonia
Watersnakes are very inquisitive creatures, when they sense there is no danger. And I do my very best never to emit any agression to animals. For this, I often get rewarded with such portraits.

Snakes can be speedy swimmers and sometimes a photographer has to be one too.

  • Country: Macedonia
Watersnakes do not usually try to hide by remaining motionless (like some fish and other water animals do), but this one obviously thought out-of-box! So he awarded me with this close-up photo.
  • Country: Macedonia
A composite from two successively taken quick pics of the snake coming up for air.
  • Country: Macedonia
The only way to take such pics is slow - make no sudden movement! The snake is busy trying to figure out the snorkel, and for a moment hell pay no attention to whats happening below the surface. Turn the camera over, and take a self-portrait. :)
  • Country: Macedonia
The snake was ready to leave his anchoring spot, but since I wasnt quite ready to take a photo... ;)
  • Country: Macedonia
An interesting take angle made it possible to see the snake both in direct over and underwater view - plus his reflection in the surface.
  • Country: Macedonia
Snakes are quite common in my everyday dives, and thus also in my gallery. Sometimes a special light makes me think theyll be interesting to look at. :)
  • Country: Pakistan
i took this photo while i was having Indonesia`s tour and this snake came and was looking beautiful
  • Country: Macedonia
I hope this image at least chips away some of the superstition regarding snakes. These gentle and shy creatures are actually useful to Man, and should be protected. Snakes avoid humans, and will never attack what they cant eat, but they will defend themselves when endangered - like any other living beings. People unfamiliar with snakes should avoid them, rather than try to do them harm.
  • Country: Pakistan
this is a deadly snake which bit on my hand but i survived
  • Country: Macedonia
One of my regular swimming friends in the lake reed, the watesnake. Sometimes the snake will swim up to look at his reflection in the mask or camera port. At other times, hell be intrigued by the snorkel and climb my head to hitch a ride for awhile... but of all the hundreds of snakes I have met in the water, NOT ONE showed any agressive move. I hope this helps end the superstitious belief that people have about those gentle creatures...
  • Country: Macedonia
I surprised this one when he was poised to hunt, and he dived right down into the safety of the dense reed. These days there is some intense algae blooming, so snakes are frequently hidden poised to strike from within the greenish camo, with only their head showing.
  • Country: Macedonia
There is a lot of superstition with regard to the snakes, and many snakes will get killed for nothing more than just that: being snakes! I hope my pictures help change this nonsense, and show how these shy and gentle creatures can be friendly and beautiful.
  • Country: Macedonia
The snake was watching me with his eyes half over, and half underwater. They have excellent optical sensors which work perfectly in both spaces, but I have never before seen one use it thus in the same time. Luckily, I managed to snap off a photo before he vanished...
  • Country: India
Green Vine Snake name itself says they look like Vine of some creeper plant. They are thin and very long. In india their is many superstition regarding this snake but in fact they are very mild venomous and very calm by nature.
  • Country: Macedonia
The snake was resting, anchored to the reed, and his head was above the surface. I guess he was probably wondering about the snorkel... Easy! ;)
  • Country: India
    shiv ling and snake
  • Country: Macedonia
The inquisitive watersnake will often come to sniff and look at the camera, and if you dont make any sudden moves, you might get an interesting part of the second where he extends his forked tongue to test the camera aroma. :)
  • Country: Canada
    Destination: Ontario
    tree in Kernsklif park
  • Country: Macedonia
I count myself privileged to stumble on the snake-hunting-fish scene more than once in a lifetime! This time the final strike was off, very probably because I disturbed the setup...
  • Country: Macedonia
A watersnake ambush, where he waits for the fish to come near enough to join him for dinner. Besides being a nice theme, it pays to watch where one puts the hands while snorkeling. :)
  • Country: Macedonia
An inquisitive watersnake comes close to inspect the camera.
  • Country: Macedonia
Watersnake poses curious, unafraid and underwater for this closeup photo. I presume he sees himself in the lens port, because these snakes often come to watch their mirror image in my facemask too!
  • Country: Macedonia
Dangerous! Vipera ammodytes, nose-horned venomous snake is one you should make a wide circle around. He is fearless, aware of his defense, and unlike some other snakes, wont flee from men. Find more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vipera_ammodytes
  • Country: Macedonia
Snake, underwater shot. He was presumably having problems with wrongly swallowed fish, as the body contorsions indicate.
  • Country: Malaysia
Litter snake that we got while searching Durian
  • Country: Macedonia
Watersnakes are very inquisitive creatures, quick to recognise where there is no threat. As I try to spread that impression while diving, situations like this one arent rare. Although Im already used to the snakes, such hitch-hikers still make me just a tad apprehensive. ;)
