Woudnt you like to have an excellent fish dish here? Yep... thats what I thought. And believe me, it was as good as can be - the whole experience!

... but the wreck is not a ship, but the summer bar! The storm and waves have sunk the bar off the end of a pier, and now the fish are its only visitors.

Chubs slowly passing by. The lake was not so clear on that day, and I thought to highlight the fact by turning the image into B&W.
  • Country: Macedonia
A piece of torn fishermens net left in water, which continues to trap, snag, and kill fish and crustaceans. This one was properly taken out of water and disposed of. Please do the same (be careful!).
  • Country: Macedonia
Here is a fisherman story about someone unpacking new tackle and then simply throwing away the package into the lake. The story can be elaborated by wondering about how much brain is required to properly dispose of garbage, and in the same time be able to feel superior to the fish. You might want to further develop the story; I just made the photo, and took the junk out of water...

Strictly for the people which do not know much about cameras but still wish to belong among photographers, heres the simplest explanation. It is also known as "look here, press here" theory. Other photographers have long since realized it does take a tad of learning. Every day. Of your natural life. And maybe even later...

Is that how waterlife sees the World on the other side of the surface? Unless we are living the life in water, well never know.

Distorted through the wavy surface, the portrait looks really special. We can only imagine how the fish see things above.

We share this planet with large variety of beings, which makes us all Earthlings - even when many look way different from us! And we havent yet seen all lifeforms in our World - not by a long shot! It got me thinking: how are we ever hoping to find life in the Universe if were not able to recognize it, and if we are not ready to admit that everything around us, including that Universe, actually teems with life!? Only local circumstances determine the shape and functions of all life forms on Earth, so why shouldnt it be the same everywhere? Beings on land and in the waters differ immensely for that very same, logical and basic reason. Why would it be otherwise for other places? There are many places Out There. We just do not really know what to look for. Our most ancient literature still holds some bewildering statements, like "all heavenly bodies; stars and planets, are inhabited", or " the material Universe is just 1/4th of the whole Creation". Where did this knowledge come from? Why isnt it at the fulcrum of all sciences of Man? Themes worthy of pondering upon when you see a butterfly... a fish... a bacteria... ;)

Electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) in the shade of Adriatic depths. The fish has just arrived and landed on a nearby outcrop, raising clouds of sediment. Took some frames with Nikonos III, carefully keeping my distance. The fish can discharge pretty powerful electric shocks, and deep down its the last thing youd wish to experience! Electric fishes use their high voltage charge to hunt by stunning their prey. While the science generally understands their electric battery / capacity mechanism, were still know nothing about "the switch" which enables them to discharge at will.

Common sole (Solea vulgaris) in the sandy shallows of the Adriatic, photographed by my diving buddy. in the cristal clear sea of Croatian Maritime Natl Park Kornati. The place cant really be described. It simply has to be experienced the way we did some 30 years ago.

Fish are gathering intensively in this spot trying to reach something that appears to be very edible. I was not able to find anything there, but theyd know better, since they came back the moment I moved away from the place...

Cormorant watching me untrustingly, for their experiences with humans isnt quite positive. Both crave fish, and treat each others as competition.

  • Eel
    Country: Macedonia
In a nearby fish pond people raise mainly trout, but one can see an occasional eel too. Fortunately it gave me just enough time to switch on the underwater camera, dunk my hand, and click this one shot. (SJCAM M10 in u/w casing)

Goldfish were found in Rose Canyon Lake in Mount Lemmon. How they got there is a mystery.
  • Country: Macedonia
Nice fish hideaway which is difficult to find, but beautiful to photograph. It even has a ceiling light of its own! There are always some fishes in there, so Im not telling where it is! :)
  • Country: Croatia
The remnants of an old fishing boat spending its last in the Adriatic depth. So far only some ribs and hull plating resist decay, already soft and soggy. Soon there will only be a memory and photos.
  • Country: Croatia
A scorpionfish hiding behind its camo pattern, making him very hard to spot in the low light of his surroundings. But flash brings out the shape and colors making him both visible and beautiful. Adriatic, Croatia.
  • Country: Macedonia
My favorite place in snorkeling stretches, approachable only by swimming, and I call it "my garden". In the tangle of floating roots and branches below, the snakes prey upon unsuspecting fish. Nice place.
  • Country: Macedonia
The watersnake has caught himself a fish, and is now swimming toward the shore where it will be easier to organize the way to swallow it head-first.
  • Country: Macedonia
People throw coins in the lake springs from the bridge "for good luck". I hope they have all the luck they can get, but I also hope the fishes have no problems from that less-than-clever tradition!
  • Country: Macedonia
Usually they would separate to let me pass, but it is more fun if I stop swimming. Then the whole swarm starts swimming around me and I can concentrate on photography.
  • Country: Croatia
Unmoving, which is its equivalent for invisible, the big scorpion fish waits for this photographer to go away...
  • Country: Macedonia
... and it almost caught me!
  • Country: Macedonia
Torn and damaged pieces of fishing nets left underwater continue to catch and kill fish and crustaceans! Such pieces should ALWAYS be taken ashore and properly disposed of.
  • Country: Macedonia
A coot plunges after fish, and will soon surface with one in the beak. The problem is, one cant guess where... so, taking a photo of a coot with fish caught is largely a question of luck.
  • Country: Macedonia
It is not easy to dive and hunt after fish in cold water. Every warm sunray is appreciated!
  • Country: Macedonia
Cororants are very suspicious of people, and for the reason. People think they eat too much of "their fish"... What the cormorants think is not known, but they prefer their distance from humans. Not even photographers are welcome within their rather wide "safety zone".
  • Country: Macedonia
Maybe thats how the fish see us through the wavy surface.
  • Country: Macedonia
Matthew 6:11 ... and the daily bread to fishermen comes in the form of fish, but still, as they say, "having nine crusts". Fishing was never an easy job.
  • Country: Macedonia
Something like this. And so the whole day long. And so all five hundred of those that we see. And so all the coots anywhere. Among so many of them, being fish isn't easy! :)
  • Country: Macedonia
The name translates as "scarefish", and pretty much explains its behavior. Except maybe to underwater photographers, since it does not seem to sense danger from such people! :)
  • Country: Macedonia
I wonder if the fish see their sky the way we see it.
  • Country: Macedonia
These swarms follow me on every snorkeling swim I make. This is good, as they get to learn that there is no danger, and when they grow up, there will be no fear as well. And then I can take their portraits in open water!
  • Country: Macedonia
Cormorant taking some air before he plunges down again in search of fish.
  • Country: Macedonia
It is hard to survive in the harsh, hunger-driven lake ambient, where every larger being tries to eat you. The fishes combat the odds by numerous offspring.
  • Country: Macedonia
Coiled from above, the snake uses the shadow of floating vegetation to snipe at the unsuspecting fish. Quite an interesting and ingenious way to hunt. Also very succesful.
  • Country: Macedonia
Fishing is rarely about catching fish, rather about the atmosphere of enjoyment of being close to water. And I think it will be hard to surpass this way of doing it.
  • Country: Macedonia
"Im swimming in the rain / Just swimming in the rain / What an ominous feeling / Im splashing again. / Im laughing at clouds / So dark up above / The lightning just flashed / And Im ready to dive... * Let the stormy waves chase / Everyone from surface / Even with that strain / Ive got smile on my face / Ill go down the drain / With fish in my brain / Just swimmin / And drownin in the rain..." * (Respectfully adapted from Gene Kellys "Singing In The Rain" (1952)

Lake chub interested in my camera...
  • Country: Macedonia
The watersnake has caught a fish. Now hes going to swim to someplace dry to better manipulate it for swallowing it head-first. The way its grabbed now... problematic!

The watersnake lining up a fish, for lunch purposes. Snakes are very efficient hunters.

I finally have met a cormorant underwater, and at the outer limit of photo visibility. So this image had to be a tad enhanced. Interestingly, the bird was picking at some shells growing on the bottom rock. I did not know the cormorants would do that, as I surmised their fare to be exclusively fish. But this just proves that you learn something new every day! :)
  • Country: Macedonia
Fish in my Lake often swim according to size, even while they seem to share shady spots in the reed in an indiscriminating way. Maybe its just that we know so little about fishes...
  • Country: Macedonia
Fish-hunting snake is an interesting sight, and I often witness it during summer months. Hes swimming along with no sign of being alarmed at all.
  • Country: Macedonia
Springtime activities awakened by warm weather have caused all kinds of activities. Lots of fish swarms, and also the fishermen looking for these...
  • Country: Macedonia
A nose-to-lens encounter with the small lake fish which shows equal grade of courage and curiosity. A meeting to enjoy, believe me!
  • Country: Croatia
A shallow lake near Biograd (Dalmatia, Croatia, Adriatic) very near to the sea. It is an ornithological wonder, also source of freshwater fish for the nearby fishing villages. And a fabulous place for photographers to visit!
  • Country: Macedonia
... shoulda update them maps. No wonder fish aint bitin... :)
  • Country: Macedonia
"Many fish without knowing it is not the fish they are after..." - and this atmosphere lends itself perfectly for just that thought. Calm lake, utter silence, and simple scenery awakens the inner life... and should a fish actually bite, consider it a bonus! :)
  • Country: Macedonia
Heater cauldron with excellent fish soup in one of our fave restaurants in Ohrid... Should you visit, Ill show you where it is... ;)
  • Country: Croatia
No fish for two reasons, firstly because the hook and lure are embedded deep in the block of ice, second reson being, the block of ice happened in my deep freeze when I was experimenting with some "ice photography"... :)
  • Country: Macedonia
Far enough from the coast to be safe, high enough to see far, an ideal place to dry the wings! This was once a part of the fishermen house on stilts. Nowadays it is still in use by those which catch fish... only not those of human persuasion.
  • Country: Macedonia
An autochtonous sort from the Lake Ohrid, the name "plashica" translates to "scarefish". It seems the fish is only scared of fishermen, since they dont flee from the camera. Lucky me! :)
  • Country: Macedonia
Blue of the joyful kind, not blue of the "blue" kind! Sometimes, at certain light conditions, Lake waters will bask in quite incredible hues. Five minutes later, all will change - and thats the wonder of Sunshine & Waters incessant play.
  • Country: Macedonia
Nothing so mystical as the known TV series, but still an exquisite color in the reed-shaded waters of my Lake.
  • Country: Belgium
Augustss full moon. It was a dry summer last year, so the pond dryed out. This allowed me to take this shot, up close to the waterplants. I like to come close to my subject. The full moons light creates the perfect atmosphere for a night photograph. The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

while i was taking group from Houston, Texas for a snorkeling tour in San Juan,P.R. we ran into this amazing fish which i had never ever seen in my life. I have lived all my life in the ocean and of all the marine species i have seen this one stands out the most. for me its a mix of stone fish, lion fish, and manta ray and swims like a plane i have named it aquatic chupacabras. when i first saw it it was camouflaged in the sand bottom ,like the stone fish, and i could barely see it, it looks like a moth . when i got close to photograph it opened its beautiful wings and started gliding thru the water. i tried my best to keep it in front of me so the people could see this amazing display by this amazing animal. incredible but true . i feel blessed to have capture this image and thats why iam entering it in this contest.

This photo was taken from the sea shore of a village at Kerala. two men were travelling to sea for catching the fish.
  • Country: Macedonia
Its spawning season again for the lake chub (Leuciscus cephalus), and many fish can be photographed along the Ohridan shores in two inches of water, or even less. The females bodily hit the shallow water rocks to expedite the release of eggs, and droves of males follow, fertilizing those.
  • Country: India
A small fishing boat, to catch fish in the river. These are usually dugouts, and are light and small enough to be easily taken onto land.
